I have been meaning to write about our recent visit from Condaleeza Rice, so I apologize for the lateness.
I was really impressed with her. To be honest, I knew very little about her before she came, but it sounded neat to go hear a former high-ranking government official speak, so I did. I didn’t agree with everything she said about politics, but she made some really good points throughout her speech. Also, I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a Soviet Specialist. Well, there’s probably not anymore, but there used to be. I was amazed to learn that she helped with negotiations between the US and USSR near the end of the Cold War. How awesome would that be? She talked about riding in a helicopter with Mikhail Gorbachev, his wife, and Secret Service agents! I found my dream job…too bad the Cold War ended and there’s not really a need for a Soviet Specialist anymore.
My hands-down favorite parts of her address were these:
1.)”I think Thomas Jefferson is overrated.” (Amen!)
2.)[while speaking about why she chose not to become a concert pianist] “I realized I was going to play at Nordstroms or to teach 13 year olds to murder Beethoven.”
I think I want her to be my new best friend.
Speaking of Soviets, though, I also think I need to share this mural I saw at the elementary school I was at last week:
In honor of the bicentennial, they decided to represent 1976 with…
…a Russian dreidel?
